BIOGRAPHY

My whole life has been about teenagers, including twenty-seven years of teaching them science, raising my own teen, and of course, living the teen life myself for seven tumultuous years. I currently reside in lovely Connecticut with my husband whom I first dated when we were teens. I have an unfortunate teenage sense of humor, as is evident in my YA Love of Fairs novels, Fairly Certain, Fairly Safe, and 2017’s Fairly Obvious, and in my upcoming teen workbook, Girl’s Guide To Good Guys: The Power of Being Patient & Picky. I tackle the issues of navigating life, through my writings, workshops and trainings. With compassion and humor, my work empowers teenage girls to see their self-worth. It also encourages former teens to increase the amount of movement throughout their hectic day, making them better equipped to handle their own teens.

In between, I enjoy dabbling with living a sustainable life, developing my soon to be launched Mother/Daughter Teams program, writing novels for my Love of Fairs series (Fairly Obvious will be out in 2017), dancing, playing outside, and laughing really hard every day. FAQs

Where and what did you teach? Because I’m an author, the common assumption is that I taught English or language arts.  Surprise. I’ve been a Science Geek before the word “Geek” was invented. I taught mostly Environmental Science, Biology and Earth Science for twenty-seven glorious years. Following the dictates of life, I taught in Georgia, Massachusetts and Connecticut, from seventh grade to seniors, in affluent communities and inner city. Do I miss it? You bet I do!

Where do you get your story ideas?  I first began writing by developing an idea from a song. I stopped writing that story when I attended my first Renaissance Faire, which inspired the story, which eventually became my first published book. I finally returned to the first story and published it about a year later.

My non-fiction workbook, Girl’s Guide to Good Guys, came from trying to help some former students. They’re the ones who encouraged me to put our work into a book so it could benefit others, but at the time, I wasn’t a writer. Now, I am.

When did you begin writing? Teaching science was my first love, but when Lyme disease affected my heart, it stopped me in my tracks. While waiting to recuperate so I could return to teaching, I was seriously bored. Too tired to watch TV, I listened to music, making up stories in my head. As I regained my strength, I wrote down some of the ideas. After returning to teaching, I spent my summers writing, just for fun, then realized I had the makings of a full blown book. The rest is history.
